How to Take ALTACE®

Your healthcare professional is always your best source for answers to your questions about ALTACE®. Here are some basic guidelines about taking ALTACE®.

Starting ALTACE®

Your healthcare professional will start you on a dose that he or she feels best suits you and your condition. Talk with your healthcare professional if you have any questions or concerns about your therapy.

Basic Instructions

  • Unless otherwise instructed, take 1 ALTACE® capsule per day at the same time every day1
  • You can take ALTACE® with or without food1
  • Take the ALTACE® capsule whole, or if you have difficulty swallowing the capsule, open the capsule and mix the contents with water or apple juice, or sprinkle it on applesauce1

Taking ALTACE® and Other Medications

Before you start taking ALTACE®, let your healthcare professional know about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal remedies.1

ALTACE® can be safely taken with many other medications. ALTACE® can be used in addition to many other needed treatments, such as aspirin, cholesterol-lowering agents, and other blood pressure medications.1

Drug Interactions With ALTACE®

ALTACE® has been shown to interact with certain types of medications.1 If you take or intend to take any of the following medications, please inform your healthcare professional:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents
  • Diuretics (water pills)
  • Potassium supplements
  • Lithium

If you are unsure if you are taking or will be taking any of the above medications, please speak with your healthcare professional or pharmacist.

Important Safety Information

Do not take ALTACE® during pregnancy, as death or injury to your unborn child may result. Do not take ALTACE® if you have experienced serious side effects related to previous ACE inhibitors.

Common side effects include persistent dry cough, dizziness, and light-headedness due to low blood pressure. Prescription ALTACE® is not for everyone. ALTACE® may cause swelling of the mouth, tongue, or throat, which could cause extremely serious risk and requires immediate medical care. There have been rare reports of low blood sugar in patients taking ALTACE® with medicine for diabetes. Please contact your healthcare professional if you have symptoms of low blood sugar such as sweating or shakiness.

Do NOT take ALTACE® if you are allergic to ALTACE® or other ACE inhibitors.

If you experience side effects that you think may be associated with ALTACE®, talk to your healthcare professional. DO NOT discontinue taking prescribed medication without letting your healthcare professional know.
